Dr. Jacques Maomy
General Surgery Resident
Bongolo Hospital
Gabon
An Instrument in God's Hands
The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) is training and discipling surgeons and related specialists to serve where surgical care is urgently needed and where the hope of Christ can be shared in moments of deep suffering.
For Dr. Jacques Maomy, that calling began in a small village called N’Zao in southern Guinea.
As a young man, Dr. Maomy was deeply impacted by the life of a PAACS surgeon, Dr. Jean Faya Yaradounou, a 2005 Bongolo PAACS graduate now serving at Centre Médical l'Espérance de N'Zao, Guinea. Seeing how God was using Dr. Yaradounou to care for patients and serve his community stirred in Dr. Maomy a passion for medicine, especially surgery. When Dr. Maomy was accepted into medical school in Conakry, Guinea, that passion grew into a calling.
Today, Dr. Maomy is a PAACS general surgery resident at Bongolo Hospital in Gabon, where he has been training and growing as a disciple of Christ since 2024. Prayer is woven into daily life at PAACS, and at Bongolo, Dr. Maomy experiences that firsthand, praying with patients, sharing God’s Word at the bedside and in consultation rooms, and depending on God throughout each surgical procedure.
For Dr. Maomy, PAACS is teaching him that surgery is not only about clinical knowledge and technical skill. It is also about being an instrument in God's hands.
That truth became real during the care of a 40-year-old man who arrived at Bongolo Hospital with a massive inguinal-scrotal hernia he had lived with for eight years. Upon entering the operating room, the hernia's size raised concern. Dr. Maomy and the surgical team knew the operation would present significant challenges. Before beginning, they prayed together. As the procedure unfolded, Dr. Maomy saw how God guided their hands through each step. What could have felt overwhelming was a moment of depending fully on the Lord.
The following day, Dr. Maomy and the team prayed with the patient and shared the Gospel with him. Surgery opened the door. Grace made room for trust. And the message of Christ was shared with a man who had carried pain for years.
From that experience, one phrase stayed with Dr. Maomy: “I am an instrument in God’s hands.”
That conviction continues to shape his vision for the future. Dr. Maomy desires to return to Guinea and serve at Hope Clinic in N’Zao, providing compassionate surgical care while advancing the Kingdom of God.
Stories like his are a reminder that PAACS training is not only about preparing hands for the operating room—it is about forming hearts for Christ-centered service. Through your prayers and support, residents and fellows like Dr. Maomy are trained, discipled, and sent to bring healing to the body and the transforming love of Christ to patients who need it most.
