PAACS Resident Profile

Dr. Alain Nishimwe
General Surgery Resident
Kibuye Hope Hospital
Burundi

Burundi, with a population over 13.5 million, faces a significant shortage of qualified surgeons. The country has fewer than 200 medical specialists across all disciplines, with over 95% located in the capital city of Bujumbura, which is home to less than 3% of the population. This stark disparity leaves a vast majority of Burundians without access to essential surgical care. The reality deeply moved Dr. Alain Nishimwe and set him on a mission to make a difference.

Inspired by his mother, a nurse, Dr. Alain witnessed firsthand the profound impact medical professionals can have on their patients. Visiting her at work, he saw doctors expressing love and care, sparking his dream of becoming a doctor. This dream, nurtured through fervent prayer and a strong faith, eventually led him to the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS). At PAACS, Dr. Alain is developing both his surgical skills and deepening his faith, learning to address the holistic needs of his patients.

Now a second-year resident at Kibuye Hope Hospital in Burundi, Dr. Alain sees the immense need for surgical care every day. Patients often arrive with little hope, their conditions worsened by long journeys and lack of earlier intervention. In these moments, Dr. Alain and the PAACS team provide not only surgical care but also spiritual encouragement, sharing the love of Jesus with their patients. They remind patients of God's love and His desire for them to be His children, assuring them that placing their hope in Jesus will give them the strength to endure surgery. These heartfelt interactions and successful procedures often lead patients to testify about the miracles they experienced. They return to their communities, sharing that they encountered God's love and witnessed His work at the hospital.

Looking to the future, Dr. Alain plans to return to his village and work in a missionary hospital, addressing the severe shortage of skilled surgeons in rural areas. He wants to train the next generation of surgeons in Burundi, hoping to create a ripple effect that ensures more communities receive the surgical care they need. Through his work, he hopes to bridge the healthcare gap in Burundi, transforming lives and communities in the process.
