Dr. Hellen Kihoro
General Surgery Resident
AIC Kijabe Hospital
Kenya
Dr. Hellen Kihoro is a general surgery resident at AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kenya. Her walk with Christ began in 2014 during a moment that changed her life. After losing a patient despite all efforts, she was moved by the family’s response. Instead of despair, they joined hands, prayed, and thanked God. Their unshakable peace in the face of loss led her to surrender her life fully to Christ.
This encounter shaped both her faith and her calling to medicine. During her internship at Kijabe, she discovered PAACS. It was not just a training program, but a place where her love for surgery could be joined with her desire to live out the Gospel.
Now in her second year, Dr. Kihoro treasures the environment PAACS provides. She sees it as a community where surgical excellence is inseparable from discipleship. The spiritual curriculum grounds her faith, strengthens her walk with Jesus, and gives her courage to share the Gospel with patients. She also values the consultants who train and correct with patience. They help her learn to care for patients safely while gaining experience with an increasing variety of cases.
For Dr. Kihoro, every patient interaction reveals something of God’s presence. “Every time I take care of a patient, I see God. Through their ailments and through their journeys. It makes me believe all the more that there is a God in control. I get to see the wonders of His creation and His masterpiece, the human body, and marvel at His works and deeds.”
She continues to witness the peace of Christ in profound ways. Recently, she stood beside a man in the ICU at the end of his illness. Though frail, he radiated faith and hope, and the PAACS team covered him in prayer. While his family longed for physical healing, he had already embraced the greater promise of eternal life. As they witnessed the peace that settled over him, his family was able to find comfort, too. For Dr. Kihoro, it was a powerful reminder of the same peace that first led her to surrender her life to Christ years before.
Looking ahead, Dr. Kihoro is drawn to trauma surgery and is committed to extending both healing and grace to patients and their families. “I will use my skills and the spiritual foundation PAACS has given me to reach the ailing in society, extending grace even in their lowest moments. I will keep praying with my patients and evangelizing as often as the opportunity presents itself.”
