What We Do
The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) is a strategic response to the need for surgeons, anesthesiologists, and obstetrician/gynecologists in Africa. PAACS trains African physicians as surgeons and related specialists to care for the poor and the sick. PAACS also disciples these trainees to share the love of Christ with their patients to bring hope to those who are suffering.
-
"I hope to continue serving among those who are under-served and those with limited access to surgical services. Wherever God leads me, I hope to serve with love, compassion, and commitment."

News and Notes
In this powerful reflection, Dr. Christopher Moir explores the prophet Jonah’s anger at God’s mercy—and the striking parallels between Jonah’s misplaced trust in his own training and the challenges Christian surgeons face today. Drawing insight from Jonah’s story, Dr. Moir reminds us that while skill and knowledge are vital, they must flow from a heart surrendered to God’s wisdom and grace. With humility and humor, he encourages us to choose trust over pride, transformation over performance, and divine partnership over self-reliance.
Two PAACS training programs—Soddo Christian Hospital and Malamulo Adventist Hospital—recently celebrated their newest surgical residents with powerful white coat and foot washing ceremonies. These sacred events mark the start of a resident’s medical journey and reflect Christ’s humility and servant leadership. From heartfelt prayers to the symbolic act of foot washing, each ceremony served as a meaningful reminder of the calling to serve others in the footsteps of Jesus.
At the 2025 SSO Annual Meeting in Tampa, Dr. Joseph Mkandawire presented research on esophageal cancer in Malawi and engaged in global conversations on surgical innovation, access to care, and Africa-focused oncology training. The experience highlighted the urgent need for context-specific solutions and affirmed the vital role of African voices in shaping global cancer care.
